Adele shattered single day streaming records with over 24 million downloads in the first 24 hours of the release of her new single ‘Easy on Me’. She’s won an Oscar, 15 Grammy awards, and has been named in the top 100 most influential people by Time. WHAT A QUEEN. Yet somehow, whether it’s by the media outlets or online commenters we are still utterly obsessed with talking about her body. Even Adele touched on it in her November Vogue cover “My body’s been objectified my entire career”.

Whilst some celebrate her weight loss, others are left feeling ‘disappointed’ as to them she was seen as a role model for an under-represented body type in the industry, but somehow as a nation we can’t seem to accept weight change with neutrality, without forming some sort of opinion. Yet, someone’s weight change, male or female, shouldn’t be news, it shouldn’t be debated and quite frankly it’s none of your business. What I've learned over the past year from becoming a Nude Artist, and painting some of the most inspirational women I have ever come across, is that to assign an opinion or value to someone’s, particularly a strangers, weight is so invasive and ignorant. This is because you have no idea what that person has been through, what their body has been through, what they have overcome, achieved and succeeded in life, so what gives you the right to pass judgement on something you know very little about?

You would think after all that’s been going on in the world over the past 2 years, we would’ve all gained a little perspective on what really matters. But weight is still a hot gossip topic, we are still obsessed with passing judgement on women’s weight, particularly celebrities.

Hopefully, we can begin to change this narrative and start focusing on what these women achieve career wise rather than body wise.
